How Many times have you put it off so far this year?
Be honest now…..
How many times have you put off doing/starting something that you know will;
Make you feel better or will make you feel happier?
- It’s too hard
- I haven’t got the time
- I can’t afford it
- I’ll never do it because I always fail
- I’m too scared
- I can’t be bothered….
Or, any number of other excuses ( I am sure that you can think of many more that you’ve used)?
Was one of your resolutions this year on the list above and yet we’re at the start of summer, the sun has started to shine, days are longer, we feel more awake because there is more daylight but yet….nothing has changed.
WHY IS THIS?
We’re all human and we all have a human brain.
Our brains are excellent at keeping us safe and away from danger or difficulty.
Our brains don’t like change – so they send us signals (see excuses a-f above again!) to stop us from making life difficult for ourselves.
This doesn’t help though if you do want to get fitter and to start losing weight does it?
Change your mindset and change the way you think. Let’s take the ‘ I haven’t got enough time ‘ as an example. Yep , I use that all the time and in fact before I started to write this Blog I thought to myself….I don’t really have the time to do this, shall I do it tomorrow instead? But I recognised the thought in my head and I pushed it aside and said ‘ no, I am going to do this now and not tomorrow’.
Most of the time we’re not even conscious of the thoughts that are stopping us from takinn action and from making change.
The truth is we all have the same amount of time as each other. There are 24 Hours in a day.
We all have a certain amount of things that need to be done in that 24 hour day: Sleep, Eat, Drink, Work and then all the other things…..
We do the things that we HAVE to don’t we?
We do the things that we WANT to, don’t we?
and we don’t do the things that we DON”T WANT TO, do we?
But, what if we have some ‘things’ that we sort of “want” to do but to start to do them is going to feel uncomfortable, maybe physically and also emotionally?
Our brains recognize this subconsciously and so it works against us and that’s where the excuses start. ( check out list a – f above!)
What is the answer then?
Firstly you need to get really clear on the GOAL and then you need to get even clearer on the WHY.
(My GOAL was to write a blog. My WHY is because I am on a mission to help people to make changes in their lives, to make them happier, healthier and Fit For Moore!! I want to share what I have learned and what I know can really help – I’ve done it, I’ve been working hard to make changes in my life and I know it works.)
The WHY is what’s going to get you to ignore the brain or at least quieten it down a bit so you can get started. Once you’ve got started the brain will probably catch up quickly and start to like the new feelings and stop working against you so much. The WHY is also going to help you become much more aware of what’s going on in your head, it’ll give you little clues about what’s REALLY standing in your way and it’s probably got nothing to do with time…..
