How Cranio Sacral Therapy Can Help You

What is Cranio Sacral Therapy?

Cranio sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle way of working with the body using light touch. People sometimes ask about the name Cranio sacral Therapy and think it only refers to the head. In fact Cranio sacral Therapy (CST) works with the whole person, if you think the word Cranio refers to the head and skull and sacral (Sacrum) refers to the base of the spine.

Therefore the whole body is treated in much the same way that an Osteopath or Chiropractor will treat the whole body.

Changes may occur in body, mind and spirit during and after sessions.

Who is it for?

People may come for CST Therapy because they have physical problems like headaches, neck issue or bad backs but it can treat many symptoms.

They may also attend for long-standing problems both physical and emotional. Others come for on-going support in their busy lives and for help to meet life’s challenges.

Because it is so gentle and non-invasive, CST is suitable for everyone from newborns to the elderly.

Many people will have heard of Cranial Osteopathy, especially mothers who who often seek out this treatment for babies who suffer colic and poor sleeping patterns.   CST works in the same way, letting go of tension and fear held in the body which allows babies to settle into calmness.

CST supports your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself, as well as helping to reduce stress and build your underlying energy. The practitioner senses tensions in the body using their hands and helps to release them in a supported and comfortable way.   It is completely non-invasive and very gentle, there is no cracking, massage or manipulation.  I have come across many people who dislike the full-on approach of some other therapies and their bodies just do not respond well to this manipulation.

During or after a session you may feel calm and energised, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being.

What to expect during a treatment:

We will always start with a written case history, this allows me to understand the exact reasons for your visit and is really important. Typically the session typically lasts between 40 – 50 minutes, although this can vary. You remain clothed and will usually lie face up but if this is uncomfortable you can life on your side, or you may be seated.

I will make light contact with your head, the base of your spine, and other areas, encouraging your body to relax and begin to make the changes it needs. Sometimes you will feel as if I am moving your head, arms or legs but it should all feel natural and comfortable, there is never any force applied. Because the body functions as a whole, I may focus on areas other than where your symptoms occur – remember the song: your hip bones connected to your thigh bone? Well everything is connected so an issue in your neck could be related to a sprained ankle that happened a long time ago. I know it sounds odd but our bodies are very good at bringing us back to ‘ normality ‘ and if this means that you stand slightly twisted as that eases a pain on your ankle then this will form a habit that may eventually manifest in neck pain!

How can it help in the longer term?

After a session there is occasionally a short period of adjustment as part of the healing process, where you may become more aware of symptoms, this is perfectly normal.

Sometimes people report relief after only one or two sessions, (this certainly was true for me when I started having CST 10 years ago!).

For long-standing problems further sessions may be needed and many people report that they benefit from regular treatment – think of it like a regular MOT!   Clients generally say that, as well as noticing improvement in their physical or emotional symptoms, they feel that they have more clarity, calmness and their quality of life has improved.

I’ve been a  qualified CranioSacral Therapist for 10 years now as well as a Personal Trainer and am looking to integrate this therapy into my Health and Wellbeing Company.

Over the past few years, I have become more and more aware that the way to help people control their weight and maintain good health if to help them to feel less stressed and to deal with underlying issues which unconsciously have a big impact on their health and wellbeing.

Stress leads to tight necks, backs and muscles and can manifest in headaches or just general tiredness, irritability and aches and pains.  CST can help to unlock these tight areas, release pain from the body and aid the body in its natural healing process.

Treatments last approximately 45 – 50 minutes and cost £50.   (Please note your first appointment may last a little bit longer as we will need to take some time to take a case history.)

Appointments are available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in Haywards Heath.
