The Big Cheese Scone debate!

Are Cheese Scones good or Bad__-1

Yesterday Katie and I were having a discussion about her lunch….she had a Cheese Scone and she asked me if it was good for her. I asked her what she thought and first off she said yes as it’s got cheese in it which is protein. (Brilliant, she’s been listening to me banging on about having more protein in her diet, especially as she is a vegetarian.) But then I asked her what else was in a cheese scone and she was stumped.

A Basic Scone recipe is:

  •  White Flour
  •  Butter
  •  Milk.

The issue here is WHITE Flour. Whilst cheese scones taste delicious they are mainly made of starchy carbohydrates and have no fiber in them, giving your body and an instant energy boost by raising your blood sugar levels this then creates an Insulin boost . The outcome of which is you get a great big crash in blood sugar and feel tired and lethargic which then makes you want to eat more sugar to get the energy back. A vicious cycle begins.

That said Carbohydrates are NOT bad foods, in my opinion there is not one food out there that is bad (although high fructose corn syrup comes close ) it’s all about having knowledge about what you’re putting in your body and also perhaps when you’re putting it in.

Starchy Carbohydrates are best eaten earlier on in the day as this is when you need your energy. You don’t want to be fueling up your body when you’re about to put it to sleep for 7 hours do you?

So look to eat these foods earlier on in the day

  • Whole-Wheat Pasta
  • Quinoa (also a good source of protein and you can make it into bread!)
  • Brown Rice
  • Peas
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Whole-Wheat Bread
  • Oatmeal

For non-starchy carbohydrates look to eat these as the day progresses, they contain high amounts of fiber so will make you feel full up. Here are some examples:

  • Broccoli
  • Almonds
  • Leafy Green Veg (Kale / Spinach / Cabbage )
  • Cauliflower
  • Beetroot
  • Green Beans

The amazing Lisa Moore has changed my life, she has reached parts of me emotional that no one else has managed to find, she has found determination and belief in me that I thought I had lost. When I first met Lisa I was this angry and self-conscious person.  I felt upset when I looked in the mirror so much so I used to get cross with anyone upstairs in the house due to having a fat moment, mos
